Re-electrification of Hydrogen stored in LOHC

The Smart Grid Solar (SGS) project is coordinated by the ZAE with AREVA GmbH as project partner. The project is referred to as ZAE SGS in the following text.

The ZAE SGS project tests various technologies for the storage of regenerative energy produced in everyday life. This includes a redox flow battery as alongside energy storage in the form of Hydrogen. The Hydrogen is produced via an electrolyser and subsequently chemically bonded with a “Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier”. This chemical bonding takes place a Hydrogenation unit and in order to be reused must be released from the LOHC by a Dehydrogenation unit. The Hydrogen released after this process is available in gaseous for the Fuel Cell system. This entire system, from the electrolyser to the Fuel Cell was delivered by Areva GmbH.

Proton Motor provided the PM Module S5 Fuel Cell, to Areva while the DC/AC convertor required to feed electrical energy into the grid was delivered by the Fraunhofer IISB, Erlangen. Proton Motor was responsible for integrating the Fuel Cell and DC/AC convertor into a standard 19-inch rack as well as providing support for the commissioning process.
